St. Louis U. High Junior Varsity Tournament
March 6, 2010 Contact: Frank Corley, fcorley@sluh.org

This will be a sixteen team tournament for freshmen and sophomores. Each team may have one junior with little or no varsity experience. Morning will consist of three matches and all teams will advance to the afternoon for three more championship or consolation bracket matches, so there will be lots of competition for younger players. We are still discussing the format but are considering a shortened format, similar but not exactly the same as NAQT. Our varsity players will write the questions. Fees: $60, with a $10 discount for a buzzer system and a $10 discount for travel more than one hundred miles.

6 guaranteed matches really isn't that much if you're using a format similar to that of NAQT (since an average NAQT round takes only 30 minutes)--have you considered extending that to more matches by, at the very least, allowing for more preliminaries so that you can do a round robin bracket? That way, you can avoid the issues that your own team ran into at the tournament this past Saturday.

Also, where are you getting the questions? Are they going to be from NAQT? If so (or if they're from another good provider), then the Missouri Quizbowl Alliance might be able to help you out.

Whoops--sorry about that.

In that case, are you going to be soliciting help with the questions by any chance? I was just wondering since you guys don't have any background writing questions, so it might be helpful to ask for someone who's familiar with this kind of thing to take a look at what you write.

Still, it's cool you guys are writing your own questions!

Absolutely! :D That's done not nearly often enough in Missouri.

If you're considering doing something like the 20/20 format, you'll definitely want to do five or six prelim rounds because those rounds do go quick. You should be able to get that many in before lunch easily.

I'll post results once the coach sends them to me. I'll have to poke and prod him, though.

Also, Matt, you know you won, and you're the only one from the whole tournament who is on this board,as far as I know.

Yeah, I know who won and who got third place, what I want to know is everything else, and I wasn't asking for individuals.

It is generally accepted practice to have tournament statistics up within a few days of the event, anyway, so there's nothing wrong about asking for them.
