Stephanie, that's not quite how the question was written. There was enough space for someone to simply buzz off of 1975 (which it appears people did).
Gotcha. Reading the stuff above, I realize that was the case.

I think it would be a good giveaway clue for a pyramidal question, perhaps if it were worded more like "FTP, name this 1975 film starring Jack Nicholson that is based off of a novel", but yeah: it's dubious the way it is written, and it's definitely not a lit question.

...especially because that status is in extreme doubt. Totals for published books vary by the millions or billions. For example, Mao Zedong's Little Red Book is often cited as the world's second most published book with 800 million to 6.5 billion printings. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_books --there are cited sources for the numbers) Given the incredibly imprecise nature of such claims, writing a tossup about it (especially using it as the second clue) is inappropriate, and answering that tossup correctly shows nothing but good luck that one read the same source as the Question writer.

If I read it right, Don Quixote doesn't even appear on this list. So how he fathomed to answer that correctly i do not know, and what source QG used we'll never know. Oh wait i'm assuming that they have sources and don't just randomly make up facts and attach whatever number they feel like as answers to math questions.

I wished that I could have been trapped in the sealed room instead of playing those questions, because hypercapnia would be a pleasant alternative to that disgrace to quizbowl.

Grant, your statements are in my quote. Please don't falsely attribute everything you say to me. :)

Edit--never mind, it just showed up that way for some reason. Sorry.

Though I do agree with all of it, more or less.

I do know where QG got its "2nd most published book" idea--there is a BBC news article about it: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/arts/4455833.stm.

However, while I usually would think that's a convincing article, the numbers simply don't make sense. I wouldn't understand how Don Quixote could possibly beat the main text of ~billion strong world religion (the Quran) or the official text of a Communist country with a population several hundred million strong. Don Quixote is popular, but seriously?

sorry the forum was being dumb and it took me about 5 edits let me not quote you.
Yeah, i don't know where the BBC got their data, but there's no way it's right. Chalk up 1 for QG!
I wonder how many of their questions besides math are just factually wrong. There's so many that no one even knows, how do we know that they're even correct bad questions?
There was an Alexander the Great bonus (one our freshman would have 20'd) that claimed Alexander was the first person to be named the Great. What about Cyrus the Great? or Darius the Great? Xerxes the Great? any pharaoh that was Great? It was just one of their rambling facts, but it's still wrong.

hahaha... I really was about to buzz in with Mao's book on that 2nd most published book question. I'm not sure what stopped me, but I'm glad I hesitated...

Well done! I am sure Robert will be interested in this article. Thanks!
