Maple Woods 2009
Maple Woods 2009
For those of you who don't know Maple Woods starts this Monday. As far as I know this year all teams playing in the tournament will be playing on Monday and the top 4 will come back to play in the finals Thursday (at least that is what my coach to me). Truman will be playing and I know Ft. Osage will be fielding a team. I'm not sure what other schools will be playing. No one put a post up about the tournament yet so I just thought I'd get the ball rolling.

NKC will be there, and I'm sure liberty and savannah will be there.
The only reason we keep coming back is the free cookies, and the fact that those pens are the greatest ever created by man.

Amen to that! I enjoy the fact that we miss most of the day from school. I thought most everyone will be there like last year. I'm just wondering how they will be able to place all the teams in that room tomorrow. It was just big enough I felt last year, but I don't know anything.

Does anyone know which days which teams are playing? I have it written down that Truman's playing on Tuesday, but I could be wrong.

All teams, at least to my understanding, will be playing tomorrow. That is what Mr. Tarvin told us Friday anyway. He's been known to be wrong in the past though

I just called him. We are all playing tomorrow. And though we won't be in class for 7th block tomorrow, I still need to turn in my Comp 214 paper...That is what Mr. Tarvin told us Friday anyway. He's been known to be wrong in the past though

Budget issues apparently created a shortage of pens, so I could not find any for you Charles.
NKC got 1st
Park Hill 2nd
Savannah 3rd
Truman 4th
I imagine the same outcome will happen on Thursday.
The tournament was pretty much the same as last year, and is in no way quiz bowl. We got 5th by a few questions, but Cameron wasn't there.

I agree, but it's still a pretty fun distraction from the normal season. And Savannah only beat us by 1 point, so I think it will be NKC, Park Hill, then a fight for 3rd.The tournament was pretty much the same as last year, and is in no way quiz bowl. [emphasis mine]

Truth. 3rd and 4th and maybe 2nd could be a tossup. NKC was pretty far out front though. What I don't understand is how Park Hill always performs so well here. I wonder if they study for it or something, though I don't know how that would be done.

Hooray useless trivia!!!
Maple Woods 2009
I have NKC with 127 points, Park Hill 117, Savannah 112, Truman 111. Liberty was close with 106 and the rest of the teams were under 100 points. We started out great in the first period, having 41 points to NKC with 44. Then it went downhill for us. I'm just glad we made it.

The distribution was the strangest thing I have heard. I wonder if they had a meteorologist write all the science.

Anything's possible. The people who run this event at Maple Woods always struck me as exceedingly strange.FishyFreshman wrote:The distribution was the strangest thing I have heard. I wonder if they had a meteorologist write all the science.

Agreed. I mean, I have heard of a derecho, but I wasn't able to divine what they were looking for from the clue. The science (meteorology; there seemed to be a dearth of other sciences) ranged from terribly obscure (triple point) to giveaway (tornado, sleet).FishyFreshman wrote:The distribution was the strangest thing I have heard. we did too spencer, don't feel bad.
I also appreciated the heavy frankenstein and barbecue distributions. Particularly how the 2 frankenstein questions made up half of the lit distribution for the day.
And did anyone hear her say cacology (or however you spell it)?
Because we heard apology and then ecology, so that threw us off. Ironic though that the word meant mispronunciation.

Now my comment seems rather conceited...sorry about that.we did too spencer, don't feel bad.
I don't think we correctly heard any of the spelling ones. They needed to be sure to pronounce more clearly.

We got cacology right, heard it just fine. The other other 2 were just words I did not know. On the bright side, we got both barbeque questions and both Frankenstein questions. And both St. Louis questions.

Jewell had a "Health Careers Information" day and KCUMB was giving out the same kind of sweet pens that Maple Woods has. Ha ha!FishyFreshman wrote:Budget issues apparently created a shortage of pens, so I could not find any for you Charles.

No disrespect to Liberty, but when was the last time Liberty didn't make finals to Maple Woods? I was just wondering...
Online
2003: We won
2004: Took second, probably behind Savannah.
2005: Second behind Savannah
2006: Second behind NKC
2007: Second behind NKC
2008: Tied for 3rd with Park Hill, behind NKC and Truman.
So... it was before I started playing, that's all I know.

There are threads for each tournament since 2005 (this separate announcements board makes it a lot easier to find them once you sort alphabetically since you don't have to sift through all the other stuff); here are the results I remember or could find.trumanboy wrote:No disrespect to Liberty, but when was the last time Liberty didn't make finals to Maple Woods? If you go to the tournament unless things have changed, they should have a pretty extensive set of posters with pictures of all the teams that made the top 4 for ages with their cardboard tags.

Yeah they had those back for about 10 years, and I think NKC, Liberty, and Savannah were on all of them, save maybe 1.

NKC definitely wasn't in the top 4 in 2005, and I know because they assumed we were going to suck again they put us on the same day as Savannah in 2006 and we eliminated them.

I don't know what the exact scores were (these are estimates), but since I know that you are all dying to hear the results from this...
1. NKC (89)
2. Park Hill (87)
3. Truman (86)
4. Savannah (78? something in the 70s)
After the first round, it was:
1. Truman (32)
2. Park Hill (30)
T-3. NKC/Savannah (29)
Then, after the second round, it was (I think):
1. Park Hill (55)
2. NKC (53)
3. Savannah (52)
4. Truman (51)
We had a very bad second round, but the lead bounced around all day.

I really want to know who derived so much pleasure from having so many terribly obscure questions about the most minute topics. There were many questions that, to my knowledge, went unanswered by any team.NKCtrashman wrote:yeah the questions went from not too bad on monday to extraordinarily crappy today

And again, the absurdly hard meteorology questions were featured...
