So THAT'S why there are hardly any St. Louis teams signed up for the NAQT qualifier. And we hear absolutely nothing about it until 10 days before the tournament. Seriously, it's 2009, there's this thing called the Internet, this message board has been here for 5 years, the MACA site has listed tournaments for at least 3, please use at least one of these media to announce tournaments and see what's already been announced!

All of this information was available at the MACA convention. Sorry about not getting them posted to the website.

By the way, the MACA convention will be September 28, 2009. I am planning on running the same 3 break-out sessions we ran: tournaments around St. Louis, tournaments around Kansas City, and tournaments throughout the rest of Missouri. We would love to have the dates for your tournaments available for these sessions. You also would be invited to say a word about the tournament if you so desired.

A list of next year's MOQBA-sponsored events will be available in August, so hopefully there will be fewer date conflicts next year. Also, I am still tentatively planning on attending the MACA convention.

Hmm...the scores are surprisingly high--who was the question provider? If it was Questions Galore, has there been any improvement?

We enjoyed them . . . . well, we thought ther overall literature category could have been a little stronger and a little more prominent (since some games seemed to only provide as few as 5 literature questions, . . . but they are well written 2-line questions.

Bob Brown, Richland assistant coach and message board contributer, wrote them. We used them in Two Saints in 2005 and 2006. I believe he also wrote for Missouri state when he lived in Oklahoma. On the advisory committee, we have discussed and wished he wasn't so well connected with a Missouri school (as far as writing for our state competition).

I just realized Bob Brown was with you all in Rolla. He is the guy with the silver hair.

Umm...he was? We played Richland and the only coach with them was Coach Stephens--according to him, Coach Brown was "probably in bed or something like that." :D

Pity your description didn't apply to Questions Galore...

500 points? Hm... oddly high.

Odd, I've NEVER been to Warrenton. Whenever we went, I was either sick, had an interview, or we had a snow day or something, or we just didn't sign up.

The 550 did set our school record. We scored 525 (vs. Hannibal) and 510 (vs. FZN) last year at districts with Pickerell questions. The only other time we scored over 500 was vs. FHC (GAC championship game 2005).

I think we would have scored another 500 points against Washington if we would have played them in the 2nd round. When I walked down to see who we were playing for the morning, both Hallsville and Washington had not drawn. Hallsville drew #1 at that time which meant they played us in the 2nd round.

You also might note that this is not the same team as you saw in the fall. This team consists of the top 2 A players and top 2 B players (the same players that only lost by 15 vs. Eureka at Cuba and 20 vs. Savannah at Hancock).

Our bonus points were: 210, 205, 175, 220, 130, and 200.

I am working on my post-tournament observations. I found this interesting, but am somewhat curious how often this happens. We scored 5 of the top 6 scores. Our bad game (vs. CBC) ranked 13th out of the 64 team scores produced.

1st 550 FZW vs. Elsberry
2nd 505 Hallsville vs. Washington
3rd 480 FZW vs. Mexico
4th 435 FZW vs. Hallsville
5th 420 FZW vs. Westminster
6th 415 FZW vs. Borgia

13th 350 FZW vs. CBC

I did look at the Washington scores (just for a quick comparrison) and CBC's points ranked 14th, 16th, 17th, 20th, 30th and 65th. I am sure this is quite rare to have these rankings and still walk away with the championship.

Eh, depends on who you played. If it was round robin that is a little weird, if not, just luck of the draw.

I thought I would add a little side story to the Warrenton Tournament.

Their coach contacted me one week prior to his tournament about supplying questions. It seems that the state provider was unable to provide questions for the Warrenton Tournament after he had promised to do so.

I was sick this weekend and stayed home from Rolla to get well. I missed every basketball game last week and will probably miss most of them this week as I am still coughing real bad.

Thanks for the "silver hair" description. Much better than "gray hair."

In the past few years, I have made an effort to supply more three sentence pyramidal questions. However, some coaches don't want long games, so I provide them (the people paying the bill) with what they want. I know this may disappoint some players on this board, but they are paying the bill.

It looks like NKC, Liberty, and Savannah are going to have one knockdown-dragout fight to go to state. What a pity. Ditto for Rockbridge, Hickman, and Kirksville. I wish I was on the advisory board to have some input on this situation..

Thanks for writing great questions this past weekend!

If you were on the advisory committe, you would find out the same thing we have found out. MSHSAA's philosophy is to make sure the best teams from each region of the state come together to compete. They are not worried about having the best 4 teams their or best 8 or whatever. They want to make sure the best team gets there. That's all they care about for any of their sports/activities.

The best teams also do adjust from year to year. FHC has passed up FH and FZW as the team to beat in St. Charles. This was never the case before these past two years. Westminster did manage to make it to the finals of this tournament, but they used to be a super power destroying all St. Louis teams in their path (with only Savannah able to keep pace with them during state championship games).

The interesting thing is going to be how to deal with sectionals. Do you realize that if Kirksville wins their district, they have to travel all the way here (to FZW or FHC) to play sectional games starting at 4:00? How many teams want to deal with that? I know I don't. I wouldn't look forward to getting a substitute, making the travel arrangements to travel 3 hours to play a couple of games.

So . . . you know . . . we keep trying to discuss better ways of doing things, but it just hasn't quite gotten as far as I would like.

We were happy with the questions . . . except, where did all the literature go? In my final analysis, we answered 14 literature questions to our opponents answering 9 over the six games. We were 34 - 13 in math, 37 - 11 in social studies, 28 - 19 in science. So, what happened to the literature questions, Bob?

We had 440 in the final game (which is what is posted from Mr. Crowder's e-mail). But, I had 420 in all of my analysis.

Stupid me!

I thought the location of sectionals was already predetermined and that the D7/D8 sectional would be at Fort Zumwalt West as well...

Yeah, for an organization that sure makes a huge deal out of making sure we don't miss any more school than absolutely necessary, MSHSAA sure isn't helping their cause.

Well, to me, it really wouldn't make much sense to host it at a school that wouldn't be participating, in the case that FZW does not win districts.

Maybe you can meet in a motel room in Columbia and play the sectionals on two opposing beds.

Sectionals will be hosted by the winning team of the odd districts this year (odd year) and the winning team of the even districts next year (even year).

I already told the coach of FHC to be ready for that if they win. We will only need one room and will need to secure a moderator for that Thursday night. We have several quality moderators in the area (I talked to two of them Saturday that we will be using on Saturday). Michael Kaiman would moderate (he always moderates at state), but is unavailable that evening. He was the announcer this past weekend at state swimming, so it was fun to see him do that.
