Also, the score in the bracket is a typo, and the score listed on the scoreboard page (245-170) is correct.
This is now fixed.

Also, I would agree that this might have been our best tournament. Then again, I'm slightly biased. :)
Rolla Spring my senior year was my favorite tournament I went to during my time playing, and I think my best tournament during my time :).

I hope you choose to take your arguments to the bigtimes on hsquizbowl.org, because somehow all of the formats that are considered to be good universally around the nation significantly reduce and usually eliminate math calculation. If you are able to prove to the rest of the country and to all the authorities on what good quizbowl is that nationwide standards are wrong and that Missouri's standards are correct about this matter, then I will change my belief unconditionally. The choice is yours, just go to hsquizbowl.org and start a thread laying out your belief about why math calculation needs to happen.
That sounds like a noble idea.

You were pretty impressive at this tournament. Interestingly enough, Julia was our 2nd best scorer at this tournament her sophomore year. That Danielle girl just never went to anything outside of St. Charles County her senior year leaving Teri to defend for herself.

We had 3 more tossups than FHC in the final. But we didn't get the ones with the bonuses. We shot ourselves in the foot, and they capitalized, and Charles played a very good game as always.
This does however point out a flaw in the MSHSAA format that not all tossups are rewarded with bonuses, and it really doesn't make any difference what happens in the 1st and 3rd quarters, because those tossups are meaningless without an attached bonus. Of our 22 tossups, 17 of them came in 1 and 3.

I don't say any of this to discredit FHC, they deserved to win since we just couldn't get the things we needed to get. I also don't want to discredit the questions, which were just fine. But I just really hope that Missouri switches to 20-20 like the rest of the quizbowl universe, for this reason, and the fact that the MSHSAA games are endlessly long, and without competent moderators, cannot be done with good questions.

Dear coaches,

First of all, I would like to thank everyone for attending the 2009 Missouri S&T Spring Tournament.

Francis Howell Central A emerged as champion of the large school division with a 340-265 win over North Kansas City in the championship game, and Liberty defeated Eureka for third place. In the small school division the champion is Fordland, who clinched their championship with the second of their two ten-point wins over Salem A; the final score of the championship game was 205-195. Hancock A took third, defeating Salem B in the third-place game. Congratulations to all teams on their fine performances.

Full results have been posted on the Missouri S&T ACO website:
Small school results: http://web.mst.edu/~cbowl/hosting/0809/spring09smallfull_standings.html (full standings); http://web.mst.edu/~cbowl/hosting/0809/spring09small_standings.html (preliminary rounds only)
Large school results: http://web.mst.edu/~cbowl/hosting/0809/spring09largefull_standings.html (full standings); http://web.mst.edu/~cbowl/hosting/0809/spring09large_standings.html (preliminary rounds only)

(A quick note on the small-school results: for some reason, the scoresheets from the final round's games somehow never made it back to me after the tournament, so unfortunately I've been unable to enter complete results from those games. If anyone is able to fill me in, I'll be happy to go back and enter those stats.)

On the strength of these results, the top two teams in each division have qualified for two national tournaments: the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament, which will be held May 29-31 in Chicago, and the PACE National Scholastic Championship, which will be held May 23-24 on the campus of George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Information on these two tournaments can be found at http://www.naqt.com/hsnct/2009/details.html and http://www.pace-nsc.org/ respectively.

I would like to thank the following people for graciously volunteering their time to help staff this tournament: Dr. Ilene Morgan, Sean Phillips, Paul Nelson, Neel Kotra, Zack Christensen, John Ahlfield, and Ryan Stander.

Missouri S&T will host two high school tournaments next year: the Fall Tournament will be held on December 12, and the Spring Tournament will be held on March 6. Invitations will be sent out later, but I wanted to go ahead and get the date out now. The NAQT Missouri Qualifier will be held on March 20; I will still be directing this tournament, but it will be held on the campus of the University of Missouri in Columbia, in order to provide a more centralized location.

Please find attached to this email a copy of all seven rounds of questions used at this tournament. Once again, I would like to thank everyone for attending, and wish your teams the best of luck as they compete the rest of the season.

Discussion on the relative merits of MSHSAA and tossup-bonus formats has been moved here.

Hey, did you by any chance enclose a copy of the special 3rd place match set that you had to create on the fly?

Why would they not use the same match as the final? That's what every other tournament in existence does.

There was an issue with the wrong packet being read in one of the playoff games, so that Liberty heard the semifinal packet in quarterfinals while NKC, Eureka, and we heard the quarterfinal packet. Thus, we all used the final packet (#7) for semfinals, and because NKC and we hadn't heard the semifinal packet, we used that one for finals. However, I don't know what packet Liberty vs. Eureka was played on, though I heard that it was a new MSHSAA format packet created on the fly with extra questions.

It was that packet I was referring to.

Yeah that's the message we got. We had the 3rd and 4th quarters brought into the room during the game haha.

If it's so noble, then I'd hope that I'll see something on there soon since its been a couple days since I originally brought the idea up.

Well, I am not on the internet all that often during the week. I just have too many other things to do. Grading!! Ugh! The end of the quarter is Friday and I am still not caught up.

This is correct. I'm unfortunately not going to be able to distribute that packet, though.
