Congrats to TJ (by 10 points in the final; exciting) and Richland (12th time, dear Lord...).

The scores....man I'm going to be sick....we played Richland better than anyone at this tournament. This is so dumb.
2008 MSHSAA State
Yes, you guys would have most likely finished second in class 2A. We substituted very liberally, with all eight of our players getting in games.
Logan was the high scorer in class 2A with 61 questions answered in 5 games. Brian finished in the top eight, also.
Ian (from Plattsburg) was impressive, especially as a freshman.
Good luck to all of you seniors at Fordland.

I am going to have to agree, you guys gave us the closest game in class 2.Ford08 wrote: The scores....man I'm going to be sick....we played Richland better than anyone at this tournament. This is so dumb.

Congrats guys on #12.

Looking at the 4A results through round 2, it looks like a 1-2 team is going to make playoffs. And the potential for utter chaos in 3A.

I don't think I've ever seen it happen where after the three prelims, there were seven teams that were at least 1-2 with one of those 1-2 teams making the playoffs because of points. I certainly have never seen it happen TWICE in the same tournament. If you ever needed harder empirical proof that this system of preliminary play does not necessarily select the top 4 teams for playoffs and is insanely arbitrary, I'd be hard pressed to find a better example.

Congrats to Notre Dame and NKC for taking home the State Championships!
I was shocked to see that Savannah lost in the semis as well. Awesome job to David, James, Christy, Stephen, and whoever else I forgot that is on the ND team.

I can't speak for Class 3, but I think amusingly, the top 4 teams in Class 4 did end up making it to semifinals, despite really strange prelim rounds.scphilli wrote: I don't think I've ever seen it happen where after the three prelims, there were seven teams that were at least 1-2 with one of those 1-2 teams making the playoffs because of points. Congrats to all the winners today! This was the first State tournament I've missed since 1995; sounds like I missed a good one.

Speaking of State...
Hot damn Ravi. You're awesome.
I love how we got closer to beating second seed than we were to beating 4th in the PM rounds. In the morning, we were just 30 shy of beating Ladue... ah well, c'est la vie. It was my first state tourney, and I'm impressed.
I got 4th place individual (12 in the last game against Ladue).

This was the first state tournament I've missed since 2003... I was tempted to drive up this morning, but decided against it at the last minute. Congrats to the winners.

about state in general... WOW.
Also, it's kind of misleading to refer to Ladue as the "4th seed." I thought they'd beaten us in the first round until I saw the score sheet, and anyone's seeding would suffer after playing NKC.
Congrats to everyone, especially winners.
lol... if it's any consolation, that was my best game today, and probably all season. It was also very close (specifically, tied) until we got several questions in a row at the end.AShoaib wrote:Hot damn Ravi. You're awesome.

FWIW, i would have to agree that Ladue, the 1-2 team, actually did deserve to be in the top 4 (especially after hearing they beat Eureka). I mean, they lost to the 1st and 2nd best team in the tournament, so I think it shockingly actually ended up fair. I might have more to post later.

Yeah.... 80-70 first quarter, and then after that, we were almost always within 30-40 points. By far, my favorite game of the tournament. Ladue v. Eureka (AM) comes in a close second. It was also very close (specifically, tied) until we got several questions in a row at the end.
Ladue had the worst draw. Ever. Playing the 1st, 2nd, and 4th team at State would have obviously hurt their PPG.
Seriously though: how did Savannah lose to Priory? Mr. Gibbs and I discussed this, and he was completely baffled. A Priory kid was all "Oh, Savannah was overrated- they played easy teams. Terin always buzzed in early and got it wrong...". Gibbs and I agreed that the kid had no idea what he was talking about. Was anyone watching? Maybe a Savannah/Priory member can shed some light?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHOh, Savannah was overrated- they played easy teams.
2008 MSHSAA State
Just further justification to the idea that no matter what you think the preordained result will be, you should always play the games. Good things can happen, like Terin buzzing in and getting it wrong often enough to wreck the overall result. Or you get that lucky packet full of things you know very well.ashkenaziCD wrote:HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHOh, Savannah was overrated- they played easy teams.
Incidentally this makes what 8 different schools to win the 3A title, significantly more than any of the other classes iirc.

I thought I had them here with me at school but left them at home. I will post them soon.mprablek wrote: what were the individual ranks/scores for class IV?
Marc,
You were 3rd. I will have to mail your medal to you since you all did not stay around to pick it up.
1. Charles (NKC)
2. Ravi (Kirksville)
3. Marc (Ladue)
4. Abdullah (Eureka)
5. Laura (Kirksville)
6. Sam (Blue Springs)
7. Kevin (Eureka)
8. Josh (Central)
Well done by all. I think Grant (NKC) just needed two more questions in the final game. I think he finished with 35 total (7 AVG) with Josh averaging 7.33/game.

2008 MSHSAA State
Tight, sorry about leaving early, I think our coach's colleague is retiring and there was an event to celebrate (is retirement something you celebrate?) that.
2008 MSHSAA State
I also find it amusing that the top scorers 1st - 4th are from the teams that finished 1st-4th, respectively.

As captain, Laura often asked her teammates on boni that we didn't know to "pick your favorite" item from a category named in the question. For example, for a bonus about a president, she might say, "Pick your favorite president." This sometimes became a joke (for example, "Pick your favorite fascist dictator.") The best one I've ever heard was at state this year: "Pick your favorite Croatian geologist." Or something like that. STPickrell, do you by any chance have the original question?

I think so. I saw his page on Wikipedia and didn't recognize anything that might have been a clue until I clicked on "Mohorovičić discontinuity" and found out what that is. It looks familiar.

It's an insanely common topic in quizbowl and in earth science, which is why I'm so surprised you didn't/don't know it. Basically its a gap inbetween the mantle and the crust.

THE MOHO!!!! Has become one of those answers that our whole team knows and bursts out laughing when it comes up. Blame Dobson.

Well, this (question 13) makes two Moho references I've seen in 4+ years of quizbowl. Is that "insanely common"?ashkenaziCD wrote:It's an insanely common topic in quizbowl
