On the same day as the Cuba tournament, there is also a tournament at Helias High School in Jefferson City.

26 teams are attending. The question provider is Bill Luce.

The teams include (my best guess from the e-mail addresses which did not list # of teams).

Crystal City
South Callaway
Fort Zumwalt West
Columbia Rockbridge
Salem
DeSmet
Ozark
Richland
Elsberry
Hancock
Smithton
Chamois
Francis Howell Central
Troy
Smithton

BTW, we have decided not to attend, because there is a math competition that day in Warsaw that our school is attending instead, and it's most of the same kids. So you can scratch South Callaway off that list.

That's a pity...

Incidentally, given the weather conditions, is there any possibility that we might have weather problems?

We just got our second day off in a row!

If our math competition is canceled on Saturday, I may just make a trip to JC to watch the tournament (and I'd be willing to help score, time, etc. if I end up coming).

I know EB has a rule that if school is cancelled on Friday all weekend events are also cancelled. Does your school have this rule. Even multi school events are included.

it always seemed to vary for us... i remember going to LSN and Lexington once after having a snow day on friday, and we still did debate things even if there were snow days... but sometimes we didn't go to events. *shrugs*

That kind of rule doesn't make sense to me...and as far as I know, we don't have one.

What does it matter if there's no school on Friday? A lot can change in a day and the weather might be perfect on Saturday. They shouldn't automatically cancel things without evaluating the circumstances.

Any news on the tournament yet? I just got the call from my Calc teacher; no competition for us.

In an e-mail from the coordinator, she is still planning on having it. We are still going (although with just 1 team instead of 2). I hope they still have it but understand if it doesn't happen.

Update:

E-mail from the coordinator

Jeremy,
It's looking good. I've had a few cancellations, but I think all of the St. Louis area schools are going to come. It will be a little smaller, but that's ok. If something happens in the next few hours, I'll let you know. Otherwise, we are still on. Thanks.

Yeah they have, they beat Liberty on an NAQT game. I'm surprised at this particular choice of tournament, but hey, it's better then not traveling at all.

The day that we see Liberty be able to make it to Kirksville is the day that Ron Paul wins the presidency.... or at least it has seemed that way in the past, unfortunately. This year has been no different.

to be honest, i have no idea why we never went to the truman tournament (or at least, never went in my time on the team). i wish that we had traveled more, but we did at least leave kansas city from time to time... whereas this is probably the only time blue springs will play a tournament east of lexington until state.

After all that discussion, Blue Springs was one of the teams that cancelled.

We had 20 teams in the morning rounds.

Bill Luce wrote the questions. We liked them. I mean, we were able to actually score with them unlike previous weeks.

Our score against Rockbridge was 275 - 280. Don't you love the 5 point loss? I think it is our 3rd of the year.

Our score against FHC was 280 - 265. We were down by 15 going into the final question.

So, maybe we will have to start playing sooner than the second half (sarcasm, in case this isn't obvious to the readers).

We were losing 90 - 190 at half against Rockbridge and 150 - 250 after the 3rd quarter against FHC. One of our players, Jason, said maybe we should always allow teams to get up by 100 points. It makes it more fun. Um . . . . let's maybe not do that . . . .

FHC defeated Richland A in OT in round 2, but lost to them by 50 points in the semifinals.

After 3 morning rounds:

1. FHC, 3 - 0, 1130 points (I think it should have been 1110; they counted 20 OT pts)
2. FZW, 3 - 0, 1095
3. Rockbridge A, 3 - 0, 975
4. Richland A, 2 - 1, 1385
5. Helias, 2 - 1, 945
6. DeSmet A, 2 - 1, 830
7. Ozark A, 2 - 1, 785
8. Glasgow 2 - 1, 685

I will try to post round by round results later.

They did quite well. However, those two scores posted there (1st and 3rd round) were against B teams. Troy does not have a strong program yet, but it is good to see they are getting more and more students involved. Salem switched their A and B teams because they did not want to play Richland in the first round. Makes sense to me.

I will go out on a limb and predict Richland will win Class 2 State this year. Just a hunch.

That's not exactly much of a limb

;)

Richland has (in my memory) nearly always been Class 2 favorite. So far, nothing seems contrary to that (this season), yet.

No it doesn't, that is something that should be frowned on. If you get assigned to play somebody then you play them.
Also, I'm thinking that the Class 2 favorite comment is sarcastic, John.

Well, I think it depends on the format. At UMR, we beat them by 70 points, but the format there is not MSHSAA. Their problem is that they blitzed once or twice, just hearing a buzzword, but not taking the whole question into context. Aside from that, they were a strong/decent team.

Eh? Was my older post deleted (Firefox may have hung over before it processed)? If so, why?

Let me summarize that post (I fail to see how it could be mean or anything):
You guys will need to improve if you want to compete. We've not played you, so I can't say how well you guys play, but going by Richland Invitational results, you guys need to improve a lot. Not to sound cocky or condescending, but you guys lost to Pilot Grove. They're a good team, but if you want to beat Richland, you've got to top that.

i think you guys are taking my post too seriously...richland are madmen, i think out of our district we have the best shot at beating them, and it isnt an iinfinitesimally small chance, but it isnt great either. thats what i think anyway. you're absolutely right though, if we really want it to happen it is going to take a lot of work. i honestly think we have the potential though...

Haha, yeah, I take everything too seriously...

:D

Some tips though:
1- Charles has a stash of questions. Read them. They may be long, but if you get some obscure information out of them, you can buzz the other team out before the giveaway.
2- Read SparkNotes and the like for some big literary figures. I intend to do this during spring break. Though it won't necessarily give you the depth that you'll need to beat a strong team, these plot outlines and character sketches can give you enough information to get the question at the giveaway clue at least. By doing so, you can help boost your score against weaker teams that don't get these Lit tossup, ensuring you a higher seed (more PPG).
3- Don't drill math. Just don't. Can you solve an equation? Find a derivative? You're good. Geometry may be something that you may want to review...

Those are my observations from our team at least. Honestly, I do see a lot of potential in you guys.

Can anybody who was here flesh out the playoff bracket? So far all I can infer is:

1 FHC A beat 16 Boonville
2 FZW beat 15 Rock Bridge B
3 Rock Bridge A beat 14 Troy-Buchanan A
4 Richland A beat 13 Richland B

And then for the quarter finals:
FHC beat mystery winner of 8 v. 9
FZW beat mystery winner of 7 v. 10
Rock Bridge A beat mystery winner of 6 v. 11
Richland beat mystery winner of 5 v. 12

and then for the semi finals:
Richland beat Francis Howell Central
Rockbridge beat Fort Zumwalt West.

I don't have the scores yet, but:

In the Quarterfinals

1. FHC defeated 8. Glasgow
2. FZW defeated 7. Ozark A
3. Rock Bridge A defeated 11. FHC B
4. Richland A defeated 5. Helias

In the Semifinals

1. FHC lost by 50 to 4. Richland
2. FZW lost by 5 to 3. Rockbridge A

I think you have the rest. I have asked for the playoff scores, so I hope to get those soon.
