2008 Maple Woods Worksheet tournament
Umm... at last check, MSHSAA format is still being used at MSHSAA's district tournament, which is suppose to be the state standard. Now, if they're going to switch to pure NAQT, then this is the first I've heard of it. Everything that I've heard from coaches all season is that MSHSAA, while they ar...

Stephanie, **** disturbing is my pastime. It's what I do. I also only got in three rounds last weekend, so I'm catching up on my debate debt. And Mr. Roney, I understand your worksheet related concerns, but much of that depends upon the implementation of the worksheet itself. While you are right tha...

No, Trashman, bad questions (such as those that we've been playing with all year on the quad circuit), lightening rounds (completely variable). Worksheets do not immediately equate to bad quizbowl. The basis of my claim is that your claim here is a classic example of ad verecundiam logic. There's no...

Define Quiz [a short oral or written test]. Define Bowl [game between specially invited teams]. By these definitions, provided by Merriam-Webster (with bowl modified to not refer specifically to football), it is demonstrated clearly that what occurs at Maple Woods is in fact, the portmanteau quizbow...

Your worksheets claim is inapplicable since NKC has, historically, used worksheets at their tournament.

If that's the case, then what will be occurring at Districts this year is not in any way to be considered quiz bowl, chiefly because the format that MSHSAA is now using is two halves of 10 Tossups with Bonuses. And my argument was holistic, since Charles seemed to be referencing the NAQT tournament ...

To seriously suggest that this isn't actually a quiz bowl tournament would require us all to prescribe to the same framework for what quiz bowl is and isn't. So what's the brightline here? Do buzzers and timers make the concept, or is the concept dependent upon the testing of knowledge? Is there a p...

Bizarre philosopical constructs that the Tournament Director loves and that nobody competing has a chance to have learned? Your point, sir? This complaint is non-unique. It assumes that anything related to the activity would have to exist within the normal bounds of your average secondary school ed...

I would assume that for the final round they would make sure to check and re-check their answers. Even if they don't moving into to day, extra care to double check protests will undoubtedly be made. Even then, it's important to remember that mistakes are made at these kind of things, something made ...

I know that hindsight is always 20/20... but we made a lot of stupid mistakes that cost us at least 5 points against the Maple Woods field. Everyone probably thinks that though.

We've been doing well. Undefeated through Quads, though we lost to Blue Springs for the championship. I've missed some of our tournaments for Debate, but things have been good. Our best year in quite a while.
But Maple Woods is the format that plays most to our strengths.

Looking at the Wednesday List... Kansas City Catholic Homeschools, Liberty, Park Hill, Platte County, and Excelsior Springs (I believe that's our line up) I'm feeling fairly confident that the qualifiers on Wednesday will be Liberty and Park Hill.

I rather enjoy quads. They give me something to do on Wednesdays. It's also nice since for me, Quiz Bowl is secondary to Debate. If I was at NKC or Liberty, it'd have to be one or the other.

That seems to be the state of things. I hadn't seen them scheduled for anything. And even if they had been scheduled, I cannot conceive of a reason that they would not be in finals.

The other undefeated team coming into this week, and still undefeated is Park Hill. What is the Quad Final looking to be? Truman, Park Hill, Lee's Summit North, and Blue Springs?

Our district was odd in that there were decent teams eliminated in the morning (Oak Park and Benton) because they had awful schedules - both teams played us, then they played each other. Then PHS was an awful team who had just ran up a huge score against some crappy tonka-esque team, so they snuck ...
