Re: Louisiana EARly November Tournament (LEARNT) - 12/16/2017

We're moving the date of this tournament to December 16th. This will hopefully serve as a more convenient date for more schools. Also, here is a nifty map of northeast Missouri, with Louisiana highlighted. (I like to think of my town as the vertex of an isosceles triangle formed by itself, St. Louis...

Re: Who is everybody?

I'm Brandon Moore, I play for Centralia. I enjoy quizbowl (obviously), specifically, learning about literature. I'm graduating in 2018, and I'm still not sure what college I want to go to. I'm also very involved in band, choir, and student council. Michael Powers is an inspiration and I am glad to ...

Louisiana EARly November Tournament (LEARNT) - 12/16/2017

Hello! On behalf of the Louisiana Academic Team, I am pleased to announce that I will be directing the inaugural iteration of the Louisiana EARly November Tournament (LEARNT) on the sixteenth of December, 2017 (12/16/2017). We will be using IS-170 for this tournament; this set is also being used at ...

Re: MSHSAA State Records and Such

Ross' 34 tossups in Round 3 is also the highest known total for an individual in a single game, surpassing Michael Powers' 33 tossups in a game yesterday and Melissa's 29 tossups in a Class 3 game in 2002. I do, however, now hold a new record - the shortest time a MSHSAA record has been held before...

Re: 2017 MSHSAA Sectionals/State

Comparisons between 2017 and 2016 results: All four top brackets had at least one returning team - TJ in Class 1A, us and Calvary in Class 2A, Orchard Farm and Hallsville in Class 3A, and all but Washington in Class 4A. Ladue and Central placed the same as last year, as did Hallsville and TJ. Hickma...

Re: 2017 NAQT SSNCT - April 28-30 in Chicago

After NAQT fixed a statistical error I was revealed to actually be 4th individual prelim scorer! Whoa, that must have been a big error to make a 9 PP20 difference! Did they give your tossups to a teammate in one round or something? I'll need to go back later this evening and post a correction to th...

Re: 14 tournament limit and Nationals

As an ambitious current player it infuriates me that a lazy, regressive organisation currently controls all quizbowl endeavours in the state I live in and they'd go to such lengths to hold down teams with hopes of becoming nationally competitive. It's also rather disappointing that they haven't reso...

Re: Mandatory recognition

Yeah, as Joe said, the extra time it takes moderators to recognize can actually be used to your advantage. Which is dumb. Because our conference duals are typically run with inexperienced/incompetent moderators, matches take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. According to my calculations, on avera...

Re: Mandatory recognition

I don't have a major issue with it other than that it adds additional time to matches (but it's a practically negligible amount of time). But really, the main issue is that I don't really see a clear point in its usage. If there is a reason MSHSAA enforces it, I would love to know. I think it's pret...

Michael, your wins were definitely impressive. We weren't too familiar with you before the tournament, probably because you don't come to mid-Missouri too often, but after you've definitely made our radar. We have very noticeable weaknesses in music and science and you did not have any noticeable w...

I appreciate the kind words, Matt. Which round(s) did you moderate for us? I think I moderated for you twice, but I don't remember which rounds they were off the top of my head. To be totally honest though, judging by the stats, I'd say our second place victory was a bit of a fluke, but I'm still really glad things worked out the way they did. The only stat that matters is a W. That's true. I was just surprised to find that we placed ahead of several teams with higher PPG ...

I'm excited to see this rivalry play out later in the year. Great job to both teams at the tournaments they'v...

Re: Thoughts on the 2016-2017 Season

At present I just have one rumination to include: There are a couple (I believe) juniors from Kirksville that could make an impact, Nick Maag and Tyler Findling. Claire Benevento showed some early signs of prominence leading their C team at OMAR last year. The three of them, plus anyone who is wait...
